Helpful hints to protect your home each winter
Here are five ways to eliminate or at least ameliorate the roofing problems we see every winter. It all starts with understanding that your roof is a system and its performance goes much deeper than the shingles you see from the outside.

Upgrade the insulation in your attic to at least the R49-R60 level recommended for the Front Range.

Improve the ventilation in your attic to keep the interior temperature of your attic within 10 degrees of the outside temperature.

Clean and repair your gutter system at least twice a year. Keeping the gutters clean will help get the moisture off your roof and keep it away from your foundation.

Cap your gutters. This will keep all the debris (leaves, dirt, pine needles, etc.) out of your gutter system and eliminate the need to clean them twice a year.

Install an Ice Melt System in your roof and gutter system. This is the most effective solution to the problems caused by ice dams. These heat strips lie beneath the roofing material up to 18” in from the edge of the roof. This will always keep the run-off melted and will therefore eliminate ice dams.
